Pattern Project
Check out my teacher's blog on this project here.
For this project, we had to create a design and then turn it into a pattern. I thought it would be cool to do a pattern within a pattern.
First, I came up with a color palette using this super helpful video. It tells you how to whip up a palette in Procreate.
Next came creating my design.
I work at a hospital in the emergency room and thought it would be fun to make a pattern for work.
My first step here was to sketch of a basic idea, which was a cardiac monitor that displayed the name of
my work. I started out with the monitor screen and the writing of the leads. I then tried to add a syringe. Next I thought it would be cool if a stethoscope were to lead into the display, so I added that, the rest of the monitor, and then a syringe drawing up some medicine. I liked it but thought the spacing could be better. I drew an idea where the stethoscope merges over the front of the monitor. I then wrote down how I wanted to assign the colors of my palette.
Once the two images were colored, I added them together as separate layers. I resized the stethoscope image and copy and pasted it to the background so that I had a pattern behind the monitor. I then removed the excess background from the monitor using the eraser tool in Photoshop and showed both layers together and merged them with Control + E.

I then went into Microsoft Whiteboard and drew my basic layout once I had thought it over more. I drew the outline of the monitor in black, but I used the palette color for the writing in the leads and buttons. This was to avoid extra work once I got into photoshop. The design is missing the stethoscope and syringe, I know. I decided that for a pattern, this was too much all in one image. This is where the idea for a pattern within a pattern came in.
Now that the main image was done, I went back into the Whiteboard and drew my background image. I drew my stethoscope and syringe.
Now that my basic images were done, I needed to add the color. I tried using Microsoft Paint to fill in the pictures, but the quality in that program is not great. So, up to Photoshop they went. For this portion, I used the free version. I used the fill tool and put all my colors in.
Once the two images were colored, I added them together as separate layers. I resized the stethoscope image and copy and pasted it to the background so that I had a pattern behind the monitor. I then removed the excess background from the monitor using the eraser tool in Photoshop and showed both layers together and merged them with Control + E.
Next was to make a pattern of the entire image. For this part you need the real deal Photoshop. I opened the app and selected the image above. I used the rectangular marquee tool to select the whole image and made it a little bit smaller. Then I clicked Edit, and Set Design Pattern. Once that was completed, I opened a new window in Photoshop and picked a blank template. Once again, I went to Edit, and then Fill. This allowed me to pick the Design Pattern I had just created. I selected that and it filled the image with my design. You can also click View and then Design Pattern Preview so Photoshop will give you an idea of what your pattern will look like.
